Not sticking to any one theme, Exile kicks things off with the aptly titled 'Gunpowder' - harrowing industrial synth lines and rain storms collide, sounding like an unmanned Skynet factory going haywire.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNext up is one for the dance - 'Jah Zeus' is a bowel shattering take on the weighty 90s UK dub sound - think Jah Shaka, Aba Shanti-I etc. It ably lives up to its name with weapons-grade kick drums, thunder crash snares and a stark, gnarly, snake charmy melody weaving in and out of it all. Lots of tracks are labelled mutant dancehall these days but not many people are doing it like this and certainly not as heavy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe flipside serves up another storm of industrial sci-fi with 'Son of Thunder' before calming things down with the title track. 'Exile' is a 180 degree turn but maybe our favourite of the bunch - starting off with a perfect, piano-driven Dennis Wilson loop before adding in calming, layered synths and guitar (think 'Betrayed In The Octagon' era Oneohtrix Point Never) before stirring it all  into a gentle swirling close. Properly heavy, heady material: bellows-blown thickening the air around you, pressing on your temples, eventually threatening the full Kananga. But 'Thank You Lord' - with its centrifugal, quintessentially Gast flute-loop (or harmonium or melodica or whatever it is) locating the pagan-folk energies in grime and vice versa - effortlessly steals the show. Propelled by torpedoing sub-bass and bombastic martial string\/brass vamps fit for the court of Neptune (release the motherf*****g kraken!), draped with silken weather-storm keys and a surreal voiceover that sounds like a rogue Danish naval officer narrating his own mental collapse, it's just... woii.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnlike anything else out there and too, too good.
